Heather
Whitestone McCallum (right) is a well known deaf person. She is an actress and was crowned Miss America in
1995. Sign language helps her get her ideas across to both deaf and hearing people who are inspired by her.
Curtis Pride (left) is a major league baseball player with the Anaheim
Angels. Curtis and his wife are actively involved in the Together With Pride foundation which aids hearing impaired
children. Curtis Pride uses sign language to communicate with the people around him and spread his charity work around
the world.
Helen Keller (right) is a well-known deaf person.
When Helen was young, Anne Sullivan, a tutor was hired specifically to help her communicate. Because she was both
deaf and blind, she couldn't be taught visually, so her tutor had to sign things into her hand to communicate. Helen
became famous by inspiring people with her life story. When Helen grew older, she became a
motivational speaker and signer with an enormous affect. Helen Keller couldn't have communicated without the help
of sign language.
Most people know Alexander Graham Bell (left) as the inventor of the
telephone. What many people don't know is that he actually intended the telephone to help the deaf. Not being deaf himself,
he still knew sign language and taught at the Boston School for the Deaf.
